Monday Motivation - The sunflower & sowing seeds of triumph

It’s ironic that decades before I ever moved to New Mexico my favorite flower was the sunflower. I grew them in whisky barrels on my tiny apartment deck in Louisville, KY and they were my theme flower for my first baby shower.

When we moved here and experienced our first summer I was delighted to see the late season bloom of wild sunflowers painted along roads and fields.

What amazes me about the sunflower is not just it’s beautiful yellow color but how it grows in the face of adversity. Think about it - Sunflowers show their brilliance at the end of a long, hot season. At the cusp of fall, after a brutal summer, is when they come into full bloom.

I took this picture in my backyard. Do you know what this fledgling flower had to overcome to pop up in my volleyball court?

Toiling for months through darkness to reach the light, the root spread under a rocky ground, worked its way through 12 inches of dirt, a layer of rock, a thick weed barrier, more pebble rock and then face up through 10-12 inches of sand. This is why I find nature so amazing.

Despite all odds – through layers of dirt, darkness, rock and sand - this sunflower triumphed!

I believe our well-being can be much the same way. Watching this plant spring up gave me a vision of someone holding their breath through a dark season, struggling to find their way, and finally pulling themselves up through the grit to the light with a gasp of fresh air.

Sometimes we have to weed through adversity and feel like we’re drowning before we get our roots. Before we can look up and breathe.

I read a quote that “the flower that blooms from adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all”.

I believe this is true of us, too. Most of the time our lives don’t lean toward easy roads. Sometimes we fight addiction, stress, illness, injury, work and family pressures. If you’re struggling with any aspect of your wellness and feel like there is no end in sight, keep inching forward. Don’t stop pushing through the barriers for your health. One day soon, there will be a break. You’ll be able to look up, see the light, take a breath and experience a new sense of strength.

Thank you for your continued support! Keep working for your wellness and have a wonderful week!
