Monday Motivation - Feeling fried?

Detach from Digital Burnout!

Now that we’ve entered July we are in the dog days of summer and the heat has finally kicked in for New Mexico. Last year at this time I wrote a Monday motivation on burnout and the need for people to take time off for rest and rejuvenation.

Since then, burnout has become another big ‘talking point’ in the wellness industry because of the incredible rise of overall stress in our society. I think some of that is self-inflicted.

Burnout doesn’t just happen because people aren’t taking time off. Burnout happens because people aren’t disconnecting.

We have a culture that is so hooked on phones, laptops, and TV’s that even ‘down time’ is amped up from electronically fueled devices.

Technology has changed the way we process information as well as the AMOUNT of information we take in on a daily basis. Do you know that as of 2014/2015 people spent an average of 11 hours a day on or consuming some type of media? Teens in 2015 were estimated to spend nearly 9 hours a day consuming/on media. That was 4 years ago and I do think with more twitter, Instagram, snap-chat, and Lord knows whatever else, those numbers could be higher.

What do people do when they consume media? Sit. We certainly aren’t outside, enjoying nature, family and/or friends – You know, personal interactions with actual humans?

As our media consumption has risen, our health has declined.

Preventable chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease continue to increase. Depression and mental health issues from STRESS and burnout have sky-rocketed, too.

I know that in this day and age it’s impossible to ignore media. I’m not saying we have to completely cut it out. But what I am advocating is for people to take time away from it and consume less on a daily basis to avoid burn-out. Take a whole day on the weekend. Don’t check the computer and put your phone away. Do you really think you’re missing anything?

This week as we take time off for the 4th of July weekend, un-plug and be present with your family and friends. Turn off your phone, TV and computer. Completely disconnect so you can fully re-connect with what is truly important.

Thank you for your continued support, take care of yourself, be safe, and make it a GREAT week!
