Monday Motivation: Pressure!

While watching my daughter’s soccer game this weekend the girls on the side kept saying “pressure!” when the other team had the ball (which, unfortunately, was often) and our team needed to DO something to get it back. They kept saying “pressure…pressure...PRESSURE!!”

I grew up playing soccer and this just frustrated the heck out of me. I turned to the coach and said, “Pressure means nothing.” He looked at me with a bit of a question on his face. I explained, “That word ‘pressure’ means nothing to the girls. Be specific. Tell them what to do like ‘watch the ball, not the player’, ‘intercept the pass’, or ‘move to the ball’".

Pressure, for those girls during the game, was ambiguous. Of course, they need to be practicing those concepts to know what they are.

Pressure without specificity is meaningless. Pressure works best when it’s applied directly. Just like when someone says “I have to lose weight”, “eat better” or “get stronger”.

Okay, that’s noble. But how? Those terms have been so over-used in our culture that they have no meaning. They’re ambiguous. You need to be specific. How are you going to lose weight or get stronger? For instance, we build muscle by applying weight load with direct pressure, for a specific amount of repetitions, sets, and /or time. We lose weight by cutting portions, cutting sugar, adding more vegetables and salads, cutting out crap foods, etc.

This week, in what specific way are you going to apply pressure to your mindset, body, or habits to make a meaningful wellness change? Be specific in your wellness efforts. Apply direct pressure in your areas of weakness and get stronger!

Thank you for your continued support and have a wonderful week!
